- Student teaching is a major portion of the curriculum.
Why study education at Southwestern?
“Talent is not a thing, it’s a process,” observes contemporary author David Shenk. “People are training harder and smarter than before. We’re better at stuff, because we’ve figured out how to become better.” (Shenk, The Genius in All of Us.)
The Education Department of Southwestern Adventist University embraces this concept. Our commitment to integrating theory with practice has translated into a 95% and higher pass rate for students on the Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) for many years.
We are continually refining our curriculum so that future teachers can meet the needs of students in the 21st century. In our department professors’ number one priority is preparing individuals to be “thinkers and not mere reflectors of other men’s thoughts.” (Ellen G. White, Education) Thus at the end of this rigorous process individuals are well prepared to meet the challenges they will face in the world of work, and to make a positive difference in the lives of others.
