- Professor Wilcox lecturing
Southwestern Adventist University's English department offers a broad range of courses, focusing on traditional literary periods and excellence in writing and grammar. Our major classes are typically small with a great deal of interaction between professor and student. We offer unique opportunities for students planning to teach writing, with our class in Writing Seminar which offers students hands-on experience with a writing center.
Why Major in English?

- Students perform in an annual play.
The English major offers the most enjoyable reading list on campus. Who wouldn't want to get academic credit for reading the classics--Shakespeare and Donne, Austen and Dickens, Twain and Hemingway? Upon graduation, the English major can enter many fields. Abstract thinking, writing, problem solving, insight into human nature--hallmarks of English study--translate into marketable skills for positions in law, public relations, leadership and administration, publishing, journalism, business, and even web design.
Why Study English at Southwestern?
Many schools can teach the classics and train good writers and grammarians. But here we teach these subjects understanding that literature and writing matter, morally, ethically, and spiritually. Not every book is worth reading and we approach literature with a critical eye that distinguishes the great from the trendy. We approach the teaching of writing as an ethical contract between writer and reader--to write clearly, concisely, and with purpose.
