3. What can I do with a History or Social Science degree?

Many of our graduates become teachers in either public or Adventist school systems. Graduates with a B.A. in History are well qualified to teach history. Those with a B.S. in Social Science are qualified to teach history, political science, geography and economics.

Law school is another direction many graduates take. Others become librarians after earning a Master's degree in Library Science. The U.S. government seeks historians to research and write histories about the Department of the Army, State Department, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the Department of the Treasury.

Many national parks or battlefield parks hire historians to research, write and publicize the history of significant sites. Private companies need historians to research and write the history of the business. Graduates can do hands-on work to research and renovate historic buildings and downtown areas. Another career area is archival work, which involves the preservation of historical artifacts and documents.

4. What is unique about SWAU's program?

So much of the history of the 20th century is captured in video and audio format. Several classrooms are fully equipped with computers and Internet access, video, DVD, and on-screen presentation capabilities.

Students in the program will write short essays and long research papers. Easy access to research sources is available through the SWAU library and other large libraries in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.

5. How will I know this is the major/career area for me?

History/Social Science students typically have a wide range of interests. Are you interested in social history, technological history, military history, women's history or political history?  Do you enjoy studying people, their sources of motivation and resulting actions?  Are you comfortable with researching and writing? Are you confident about expressing and supporting your opinions?
