Student Insurance

Medical insurance is required for all students registered for six or more credit hours and all F-1 students. Medical insurance must be purchased at registration if the student cannot provide proof of coverage. It is your responsibility to notify Student Finance of any changes.

U.S. Citizen and Permanent Resident Students

U.S. Citizen or Permanent Residents may purchase medical insurance from SWAU at registration for approximately $173 per academic year if the student is not covered by another plan. No refunds will be made after the second week of classes.

International Students

All students and accompanying dependents are required to have medical and accident insurance coverage including repatriation and medical evacuation while studying at SWAU. The university makes such coverage available for non-immigrant students upon their arrival at SWAU, effective on registration day for the fall and spring semesters. NOTE: SWAU recommends that students have temporary travel medical insurance from the time of departure from their home country until the date of coverage provided through the university-contracted international student insurance.

The cost of the university-contracted international insurance in 2008/2009 is $1,272 for one full calendar year, billed as follows: $530 the fall semester, $742 the spring semester. The cost for an accompanying dependent child is $1,908 per year, two or more children is $3,816 per year. The cost for an accompanying spouse is $5,088 per year (Summer coverage can be reimbursed if going home for the summer.).

While SWAU will consider waivers of the university-contracted insurance plan, approval of other insurance coverage will be granted only if the following requirements are met and documented in English and presented by the student immediately upon his or her arrival:
  1. Provide an insurance company identification card showing name of student being insured, the effective beginning and expiration dates of coverage, and a U.S. billing address and U.S. telephone number of the insurance company.
  2. Verification by the company of the types of coverage - medical, accident, medical evacuation or repatriation of remains. (Medical evacuation/repatriation may be obtained as a separate policy.)
  3. The deductible amount (the amount the student must pay before the insurance begins to pay) must be indicated and must not exceed $500.
  4. The maximum payment by the company for each illness or accident must be indicated. To be accepted, the maximum benefit per illness or accident must be at least $100,000.
  5. Proof that the maximum payment for all expenses, i.e., the lifetime maximum benefit amount is at least $200,000.

NOTE: Waivers of the university-contracted insurance plan will not be granted if the student must first personally pay for all medical expenses and then collect from his or her insurance company.

If a student's insurance coverage does not meet all of the requirements stated above, the university-contracted insurance plan will be required. The premium charge will be added to the student's university account and will appear on the first or second monthly billing statement sent to the student.
