This scholarship fund was established in February, 1987, by Dr. Eugene and Patricia Sorensen, grandparents of Jason Mickley.
Jason was born in May of 1975. For the first six months of his life he seemed to have a lot of colds. His parents took him to many hospitals and doctors, but he only got worse. Then his grandfather, Dr. Sorensen, discovered he had cystic fibrosis and that he didn't have long to live.
At this time Jason's parents, Penny and Dave Mickley, were both students at Southwestern. On February 17, 1978, Jason's condition suddenly worsened, and he died at home the next day.
His aunt remembers him as a cheerful child who courageously tried to live a normal life in spite of his problems. This scholarship is for a pre-med student who has an interest in cystic fibrosis and will write a research paper on the disease. Personal and financial need are considered.
