Music (B.A.)

Southwestern Adventist University's Department of Music provides comprehensive study on music theory, history, pedagogy, conducting, composition, literature and performance. Our students receive opportunities to frequently participate in masterclasses presented by Southwestern faculty and guest artists as well as the opportunities to perform in recitals on a monthly basis. Southwestern's choral & instrumental ensembles provide our students with the opportunity to perform a vast array of music from classical masterworks to modern compositions in both large ensembles and small chamber groups. Each year Southwestern is represented by their ensembles internationally, providing our students with rich musical and cultural experiences.

The B.A. in Music is designed for students who are double majors.

Many graduates work as teachers in elementary and secondary education, college or university. Graduates may also have careers in performance, composition, church music and private studio instruction.

Job Outlook

Music education opportunities are readily available each year. Performance opportunities are highly competitive. Elite performers have a significant advantage in pursuing a career in music.

Educational Qualifications

Students planning to be music educators will complete the required certification needed for teaching in elementary and secondary education with the BME degree. College and University-level educators must have a masters degree and many positions may require a Doctoral degree.
