Kyle studied at the Drama Centre London, Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and shot his first short film, "Swan Song", following his graduation. Several commissions followed swiftly including The Mountain Within, his first feature length documentary, which went on to achieve theatrical release in the UK and win various awards including Best Documentary at The Mountain Film Festival in California. The film also screened at prestigious festivals including the 20th Coca Cola Cinemagic Film Festival in Belfast. Most recently it screened at The Modern in Fort Worth, TX in March 2016 followed by a Q&A with Kyle and the film's Emmy Award winning composer Michael Price (BBC Sherlock).

In 2009 Kyle became the Creative Director of Film & TV at production house in Sydney, Australia. During his tenure he directed numerous projects including Beyond the Search, CHIP, and Tell the World.

Beyond the Search was shot on location in 14 countries over 11 months from 2010-2011 and went on to win 15 international awards including the prestigious CINE Golden Eagle and the Christian Media Associations Best Resource of 2013.

Directed all video content for the full update of the CHIP program with main presenter Dr. Hans Deihl. CHIP (the complete health improvement program), based in Loma Linda California, is the Life Style Medicine Institute's premier lifestyle program.

Directed Tell the World, a feature length period drama recounting the lives of several key founders of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, notably James and Ellen White, Joseph Bates and William Miller.

Kyle is working on some new projects. He wrote the feature screenplay Sailfish (AKA Saving Grace), a semi-finalist in the Kairos Prize, a top screenplay competition in LA. The screenplay was also nominated for Best Dramatic Thriller at the New Hope Film Festival in Pennsylvania this past Novemeber. Kyle was commissioned and subsequently delivered the screenplay for the upcoming feature film The Defender shooting in South Africa summer 2017 and has recently been attached to direct the feature film Uncle God for a major faith based studio.

Kyle is also writing several feature screenplays now in development with a number of studios and distributors, teaching full-time, and directing the Institute of Christian Film.

Tell the World Episode 2 won an Award of Excellence at the 2017 Best Shorts Film Festival in LA, California

Australian Directors Guild nomination for the Tell the World  online series release, nominated for Outstanding Direction in an Online Drama

The Prepper, a short film producted by Portbury's 2016 Film Production Class at Southwestern, was nominated in three categories including best comedy short, best sound design, and best cinematography at the Sonscreen Film Festival. The film previously won for Best Student Comedy Short at the Lionshead Film Festival in Dallas.
