As a teenager, Sadie longed to attend Southwestern Junior College and become a nurse. However, as the oldest of five children, family circumstances did not allow her to attend SWJC or to finish high school.
When Sadie was 52 years old, her husband, John, died unexpectedly. Her thoughts then turned to her early dreams of nursing. It seemed impossible that in her circumstances, she would be able to enter any nursing program.
Sadie was admitted provisionally to the Park Place (Port Arthur) LVN program, which she successfully completed, then passed State Boards. She worked as an LVN for ten years at Park Place Hospital in the ICU and the pharmacy. She loved her patients, enjoyed her coworkers and found great satisfaction in the service of nursing. Sadie retired from nursing in 1975. She passed away in June, 2004, at the age of 91.
This scholarship was established by Dorothy and George Saxon to honor her love of nursing. This scholarship seeks to encourage that nursing student whose dreams of nursing may have been delayed by family obligations, or an LVN who returns to complete the RN program. It is awarded to a nursing student who demonstrates compassion and a positive work ethic.
