In the fiftieth anniversary year of the nursing program, Southwestern Adventist University (SWAU) is proud to announce the launch of the Master of Science in Nursing Education (MSN) program, an innovative and flexible option designed to meet the growing need for nurse educators. Texas is facing a shortage of nurse educators, with hundreds of positions still unfilled. SWAU's Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program equips experienced nurses with the knowledge and skills necessary to teach in clinical, hospital, and academic settings. This program addresses a critical gap in nurse education while also offering nurses an opportunity to enhance their careers and become leaders in the field. The program is set to launch in Fall 2025, pending full accreditation.
The 38-credit Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program is designed for working professionals and offers a flexible online format. Students take one 3-credit course every 8 weeks, allowing them to complete the program in approximately 6 semesters. This structure allows students to effectively balance their education with professional and personal commitments, giving them control over their learning journey. Dr. Terri Gibson states, "The program caters to nurses who are dedicated to teaching. We are emphasizing real-world applications of teaching, and our students will gain valuable experience that will equip them to become effective educators in various healthcare settings."
The curriculum focuses on practical, hands-on teaching and includes specialized courses in areas such as:
- Teaching & Learning best practices
- Curriculum guidelines
- Collaborative wellness
Students will also work on a Capstone project, focusing on applying nursing educator competencies, which will be refined throughout the program. "The Capstone course is designed to be a culmination of everything students learn," Dr. Gibson adds. "It allows them to create a tangible, impactful project that they can be proud of."
A key feature of the program is the opportunity for students to choose their clinical sites, allowing them to gain hands-on teaching experience in their area of specialty. In addition to the academic coursework, students will benefit from the support of a dedicated graduate success coach, who will provide guidance and support throughout their educational journey, from course selection to career planning.
Upon completion, graduates will be well-prepared to sit for the National League for Nursing (NLN) Nurse Educator Certification Exam. This certification is essential for those looking to become nurse educators in academic settings or in clinical education roles.
The program costs approximately $20,000, or $495 per credit hour. For AdventHealth employees, a partnership with GUILD provides direct pay for tuition expenses. Scholarships and financial aid options are also available. To apply for financial aid, students can visit our website and fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Our financial aid office is also available to provide guidance and support throughout the process.
Dr. Gibson concludes, "We are excited to offer this program because it not only fills a crucial gap in nurse education but also provides a pathway for nurses to enrich their careers and become leaders in the field."
At SWAU, our mission is to provide a Christ-centered education that equips students to serve others. This MSN program allows nurses to take the next step in their careers while making a positive impact on the future of healthcare education.
