Our SWAU Knights are gearing up for another soccer season, and Coach Tristan Olivera has shared some insight into what’s ahead. After weeks of preseason training, he is very encouraged by the results. Players from both the men’s and women’s teams have “come in focused, motivated, and ready to work.” They’ve devoted their energy to his instruction, and Coach Olivera sees that they are fully committed to the process.
Preseason training has brought in many new players, but last year was a huge year of growth for returning athletes, and Coach Olivera is excited to see that growth carry into this season. He explained that last year they were able to “lay a strong foundation and build team chemistry that’s carrying over into this year.” This chemistry, combined with encouraging preseason results, means expectations are higher than ever. Coach Olivera’s focus isn’t just on results, it’s also on “how they play together, compete, and represent SWAU on and off the field.” He adds, “The team is more experienced, and I’m excited to see that maturity show in big moments.”
This year, the teams are emphasizing consistency. “We can compete with anyone,” Coach Olivera said, “but the key will be maintaining that level every single game.” The players are also working on communication, defensive discipline, and finishing their chances in front of the goal. With these areas of focus, Coach Olivera is confident the teams are prepared to take on any competition. “Every game matters, but there are definitely a few matchups circled on the calendar,” he noted, pointing to the intensity and excitement of conference games and tournaments.
It’s clear Coach Olivera loves his role. He shared that his favorite part of coaching at SWAU is the relationships he forms. “Soccer is the platform, but it’s the opportunity to mentor and watch young athletes grow—not just as players, but as people—that makes it special.” He also highlighted his appreciation for the community at SWAU, saying coaching here is “more than just a job, it’s a calling.”
