What if students could step into the world of university life before the first day of class? What if they could experience the challenges and joys of living on campus, earning college credits, and building friendships long before they even set foot in a lecture hall? This was the vision behind the STEP Program, and the first year was nothing short of a success.
The STEP Program, led by Adriana Ross, aimed to provide incoming students with a head start, offering them a chance to earn college credits, live on campus, and feel prepared for the next chapter of their academic journey. But the success of STEP didn’t just come from one department; it was the result of a united, collaborative effort across several areas of SWAU, working together to help students transition smoothly to college life.
“STEP reflects our commitment to equipping students not only with academic skills, but also with the confidence, resilience, and sense of belonging they need to thrive at SWAU,” says Dr. Smith, VP for Academics.
Supported partially by Title V grant funding, the STEP program combines rigorous academic work with personal mentorship, fun experiences, and the opportunity to engage with their new campus community. The three-week intensive summer session prepared students for the academic challenges ahead, while also providing them with a taste of university life.
"We want students to feel confident in their abilities, ready to dive into their academics, and excited about the community they’re joining," shares Adriana. "The first year was a huge success. We saw growth in both the students’ academic performance and their personal development."
The program’s success is reflected in the students' experiences and achievements. From an intense debate on health topics in Human Biology to an art exhibition hosted by Professor Marcela Wall, students were able to stretch both their minds and their creativity. "It was amazing to see the students participate so actively in class discussions and to watch them come out of their shells," Adriana adds.
Of course, the experience wasn’t all work. The program offered plenty of opportunities for fun and social connection, too. From a trip to a Rangers game to an adventurous day at Bolder Adventure, students made lasting memories while building friendships. "That social connection was key," says Adriana. "It helped the students bond, creating a sense of community that will support them throughout their time at SWAU.”
Jeremiah Easey, a STEP student, shared his thoughts: “I really enjoyed the STEP program. The teachers did an amazing job in preparing students for college life. I actually understood the material being taught and was prepared to do tests every day. The food was amazing and the staff were excellent. I absolutely loved the field trips and the social atmosphere that SWAU brings.”
As the STEP Program looks to its future, the excitement only continues to build. “Our goal is to expand the program with a more strategic approach to the courses offered, greater outreach, and broader opportunities for engagement,” says Dr. Smith. “Programs like STEP are how we live out our mission and ensure every student feels welcomed, supported, and inspired to succeed.”
For the first year of the program, the results speak for themselves. STEP has not only prepared students for college—it’s helped them grow as individuals, building confidence, creating lasting friendships, and sparking a sense of excitement for the journey ahead. The first year may be over, but the future of STEP looks incredibly bright.
