What Is the FAFSA?
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a federal form that determines your eligibility for financial aid, such as:

• Pell Grants
• Subsidized and Unsubsidized Direct Loans
• Work-Study
• State Grants and Scholarships

At SWAU, we also use the FAFSA to determine some types of institutional aid.

The FAFSA Simplification Act introduced a streamlined version of the form, making it easier for families to apply. Key changes include:

• A shorter, more user-friendly application
• Fewer questions and more automatic data transfers from the IRS
• Replacement of the Expected Family Contribution (EFC) with the Student Aid Index (SAI)
• Updates to how multiple students in college are considered

These changes may impact your federal aid eligibility, but they do not affect how SWAU calculates your need-based institutional aid.
