The Department of Nursing at Southwestern Adventist University (SWAU) hosted a ribbon cutting of their new Pediatric Simulation Suite during Homecoming weekend. The renovation, including substantial new equipment and medical manikins, was realized through a gift from Wayne (‘92) and Misti Powell in memory of their grandson Asher Tax.
The ribbon cutting included explanations of the space from Dr. Kerri Kimbrow, chair of the Department of Nursing, and nursing professor Elisane Almeida. Misty Powell and Arielle Powell Tax shared their personal story and why the gift of the space was so personally meaningful to them. Six nursing students shared a beautiful, dedicatory song. President Ana Patterson shared words of gratitude for the new space. Right before the ribbon cutting, Austen Powell prayed a dedicatory prayer over the space.
The new equipment gifted to the Department of Nursing includes an infant manikin (an Advanced Neonatal Simulator Package), a 1-year-old manikin, a 5-year-old manikin, a medical bassinet, an omnibed incubator, a pediatric bed, an IV pole and various pumps, a crash cart, and a defibrillator. The renovation includes the pediatric simulated hospital room and a sim control room.
“This space goes beyond equipment,” explained Almeida. “It prepares students to provide safe, confident care for our most vulnerable population—children. In pediatrics, where both patients and families are deeply impacted, simulation allows students to build confidence, strengthen teamwork, and learn from mistakes in a safe environment before entering real clinical settings."
The new space includes a variety of artwork designed for pediatric patients. Images of Noah’s Ark, rainbows, and butterflies depict messages of hope. The mural of Noah’s Ark was hand painted by SWAU art instructor Marcela Wall. Students from Burton Adventist Elementary painted pictures of animals and butterflies for the space, which can be seen framed on the walls. A beautiful typography graphic says, “Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from Him.”
“It was wonderful to see the room take shape. Some of the nursing students got a sneak peek. I wish you could have seen the wonder and excitement on their faces,” shares Kimbrow. “Every simulation lab is where we partner with God in preparing nurses for His work. We are so grateful for this extraordinary gift.”
