Purpose
The Machine Learning Certificate at Southwestern Adventist University prepares students to understand and apply data-driven methods in an increasingly digital and technology-driven world. The purpose of this certificate is to develop foundational literacy in machine learning, including understanding core concepts, implementing and interpreting algorithms, analyzing data, and evaluating model performance. Emphasis is placed on practical, hands-on experience and on developing the ability to use computational tools to solve real-world problems. Students also examine the ethical and societal implications of machine learning technologies, preparing them to contribute responsibly and thoughtfully to their professions and communities.
Certificate Requirements (9 Credits Total)
The Machine Learning Certificate consists of three courses (a total of 9 credit hours) designed to provide students with a strong foundation in machine learning concepts and applications. In addition, students must complete a capstone project that integrates the knowledge and skills developed throughout the certificate. The capstone project involves applying machine learning techniques to a real-world problem, demonstrating the ability to analyze data, implement appropriate models, and interpret results.
Completion and Academic Standards
- Total credits: A minimum of 9 credit hours (3 courses)
- Capstone Project: Successful completion of a capstone project applying machine learning techniques to a real-world problem
- Minimum cumulative GPA: 3.0 in certificate coursework
Most students can complete the Machine Learning Certificate without extending their time to graduation by strategically selecting courses that fulfill general education, major, or elective requirements.
